ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY - Catholic Health Services in Rockville Centre, N.Y., has appointed Dennis Verzi to be the system's first COO.

Verzi will begin his new role on July 1, the same day that Dr. Alan Guerci will take over as president and CEO Catholic Health Services. Verzi's age was not immediately available.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY - Catholic Health Services (CHS) has named Alan D. Guerci, MD, president and chief executive officer (CEO), effective July 1. He is currently executive vice president for CHS and president and CEO of CHS’s St. Francis Hospital, Mercy Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital. Dr. Guerci succeeds Richard J.J. Sullivan, Jr., who has been serving as the system’s CEO on a voluntary basis since December 2012, in addition to his ongoing duties as chairman of CHS’s Board of Directors.

Scollard Award for Leadership was given to Beth Hammerman, Mercy’s director of planning and community health. ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY - Governor Cuomo recently announced that St. Charles Hospital, a member of Catholic Health Services (CHS), was awarded a $3.2 million HEAL grant to develop a program that will support children who are ventilator dependent. Children on ventilators as a result of an accident or illness will be transferred to the Port Jefferson hospital for aggressive rehabilitation that will help them return home. Once home, support will continue through the services of another CHS entity, Catholic Home Care. For children unable to return home, a unit will be developed at CHS’s Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Care Center in West Islip. Throughout the treatment, Maryhaven Center of Hope, part of CHS, will provide ongoing education for children and their families.

WEST ISLIP, NY - Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s Pharmacy Department has scheduled a drug “take back” day on Saturday, October 29, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, in partnership with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. Members of the community may safely dispose of unused or expired medications rather than discarding them in the garbage or the toilet. There will be bins in the hospital’s main lobby for the collection of these items.
